One question that is asked a lot of wine industry people is the question of wine selection. What variety of wine would I like? What I like this particular wine? Do more expensive wines mean they are better? What about online wine websites?
Wine selection is a very personal choice. How would I be able to tell what’s good and what’s not? There are many ways to try wines without physically purchasing them first. A lot of bottles shops can from time to time have promotional wines which can be tried. Wine companies sometimes provide these stores with promotional stock to help sell their products.
Don’t think that you shouldn’t indulge in these free offerings, by all means, indulge. Most of the time, these promotional tastings are also accompanied with a sale of the product so good value can also be found.
A great way to try wines is by going to wineries. Some wineries are introducing a “tasting fee” which is mostly waived if wine is purchased. There are many different options to visit wineries. You can plan a trip yourself if you have knowledge of where wineries are. You can also use the internet to gather information about a particular region.
Some of the best information you can get is from the wineries themselves as they are knowledgeable about wineries in their area. If you don’t want to plan one yourself, paid winery trips is an option which is also available. Many companies are available to do these trips, especially in the larger regions.
These a couple of great options to try different wines from different places all from the comfort of home. Firstly, you could join a wine club. Many of these clubs have wine tasting parties which are sometimes sponsored by wineries and or companies selling wines.
Online wine websites are great if you know what you are buying. Otherwise, read what they have to say. Many online wine sales sites have different wine clubs or mixed dozens which will allow you to gain knowledge of certain regions and varieties within that region.
In the end, its really up to what you want. Nobody can tell you what wines you should like, but rather give guidance in what you may like.
Wine can be a great shared experience, but above all else, an enjoyable personal experience.
